Dearborn Police offers these tips to secure your home during holiday weekend

DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) — Criminals don't take the holiday off, so the Dearborn Police Department is urging residents to secure their homes this holiday weekend.

Residents can register their home for the Dearborn Police Vacation House Check Program. Officers will periodically check the outside of the property ensure it is secured, according to the department.

Remember to:

  • Turn your porch light on and use other outdoor lights.
  • Keep all windows locked.
  • Keep all doors locked.
  • Use deadbolt locks on exterior doors.
  • Never leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Keep your bushes and lawn neatly trimmed.
  • Use light timers for interior lights while you are out.
  • Keep your garage door closed and locked.
  • Get to know your neighbors.
  • Look out for your neighbors.
