After recovering from a recent gunshot wound in an area hospital, Martez Webb, 23, was being moved to the infirmary at Wayne County Sheriff's Jail in downtown Detroit, but before he arrived, Webb attacked a deputy who was in the ambulance with him, according to Wayne County Undersheriff Dan Pfannes who spoke to reporters Monday.
Because of the ongoing investigation, Pfannes could not say if Webb, who was being transported in a wheelchair, was properly restrained inside the ambulance from Universal-Macomb Ambulance Service.
The ambulance being used was designated for wheelchairs and the driver is not an EMT or paramedic.
The incident happened Friday afternoon on I-94 near I-75 in Detroit.
The ambulance driver, a man in his 50s, was able to safely stop the vehicle and help the deputy who was trying to get his firearm back from Webb, Pfannes said.
Mace had been deployed and the deputy was able to recover his gun and fatally shoot Webb.
Universal-Macomb Ambulance Service, Inc. released the following statement:
"We are incredibly proud of the bravery shown by our employee during the unfortunate event that took place on Friday, November 23rd 2018. We join the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in admiration of his heroic efforts and those of the deputy. We're happy both made it home safely to their loved ones. Our thoughts are with our employee, law enforcement, and the families of everyone involved."
A joint task force that includes Detroit Police and Michigan State Police is investigating the deadly shooting. An internal investigation is also underway.
Webb was being transported to the jail on a probation violation.
