Hundreds of people took advantage of an Independence Day amnesty offer from Detroit's 36th District Court, a win win for the city and those with outstanding fees.
The court's "Gain Your Independence" event provided a waiver of all late fees, penalties and warrant costs to individuals who showed up at court between July 1st and the 4th, and paid the balance of their tickets in full.
The court waived fees of hundreds of dollars for some people who at times waited in line for hours to pay.
"I think I've been here about an hour. It's worth $150," said Jonas Johnson, who said the court sent his notices to the wrong address after getting pulled over for not stopping at a red light, and not having proof of insurance.
Because of the amnesty day's success, some who were in line Independence Day morning, wished the court would make the offer more often.
"It's awesome. They should have this more often, at least every quarter," said LIsa Wrenn. "They'll get the money. The city needs the money. This is how they get the money."
