(WXYZ) — A Detroit man has been charged for allegedly assaulting and torturing his pregnant girlfriend last week that resulted in the loss of the unborn child.
Billy Ray Cromer, 33, is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, torture and felonious assault.
The prosecutor's office alleges that Cromer went to the home he shares with his girlfriend around 8 p.m. on Oct. 16.
Once inside, he allegedly had a discussion with his girlfriend and "violently physically assaulted her."
Police and prosecutors allege he grabbed her by the neck, choked her repeatedly, punched her in the stomach and in the head.
They say the woman also tried to cover up her stomach to protect her unborn child.
According to the prosecutor's office, Cromer also made her swallow unknown pills.
Prosecutors say the woman was taken to the hospital, but a day later, the unborn child did not survive the assault.
