Detroit's mayor is pushing for more membership in local trade unions.

This all ties back to the construction boom in Detroit. Mayor Mike Duggan wants more Detroiters involved in that boom and getting the work. Part of that is being involved in skilled trades unions.

Today Mayor Duggan is set to announce a new initiative to get more Detroiters into the skilled trades apprenticeships and full time jobs.

Earlier this week, his office announced they wanted to expand a construction requirement to have 51 percent of workers hired from Detroit.

There was concern that there simply aren't enough skilled workers to meet that 51 percent and getting Detroiters involved with unions and apprenticeship could be the answer.
