Detroit Metro Airport food prep workers to vote on possible strike

(WXYZ) — There is a chance workers who prepare food for planes will go on strike Tuesday – demanding better wages for the work that they do.

Starting a 6 a.m., airline food prep workers will meet and are expected to vote on this possible strike stating today at 3:30 p.m.

The union — “Unite Here Local 24” — says there are about 500 airline catering workers here at Detroit Metro Airport.

They say out of that 500, 74 percent make less than $15 an hour. The lowest wage is $11.25 an hour, according to the union.

“Unite Here Local 24” says almost seven percent of workers that prep food have been working at the airport for more than 20 years and still make less than $15 an hour.

This strike vote among food prep workers is not just happening in Detroit.

Votes to authorize a strike will be happening in 20 different cities nationwide over the next two weeks.
