DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police say a suspect was able to steal an off-duty police officer's patrol car but was later captured.

According to a DPD spokesperson, the patrol car, a Dodge Charger, was left unintentionally running. Officers who do neighborhood patrols are able to take home vehicles. The vehicle was push-to-start and the officer thought she had turned it off after taking her key fob with her.

The suspect was caught and taken into custody a short time later in the area of Kerchaval and Van Dyke. There was no damage to the vehicle.

The DPD spokesperson said it was unclear if the officer was headed home from work or headed into work when the car theft occurred.

The suspect, who appeared to be under the influence of something, was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
