DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit Police are investigating a deadly New Year's Eve shooting just outside the downtown area off of I-96.

It happened near the Jefferies Service Drive and Putnam Avenue just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Someone called 911 to report shots fired at a blue Toyota SUV, which Detroit Police later found in an empty field just off of the freeway.

The driver, a white male, was found dead from multiple gunshots in the driver's seat.

"This may have stemmed from the highway but it’s too early to determine," said Detroit Police Capt. Tharadrous White.

Michigan State Police are assisting DPD in the investigation.

The Warren Avenue exit was closed down for a portion of the day while police collected evidence. As of late Thursday, they had not yet found a gun.

Police are looking for an unmarked white cargo van in connection to the deadly shooting.

Anyone with information can contact Detroit Police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP.
