Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Darnell Earley is expected to report to work for the last day this morning.

His successor is ready to take over but not in the same role. Governor Rick Snyder has officially appointed former Judge Steven Rhodes to play a role in the district’s reform as a transition manager.

“Legislative action is essential to help Detroit Public Schools address the challenges that are holding the district and its students back,” Snyder said in a press release. “Judge Rhodes was a natural choice. He is highly respected in the city and was invaluable in leading Detroit out of bankruptcy. Detroit needs strong public schools for the city’s economic comeback to continue through its neighborhoods.”

Rhodes presided over the Detroit bankruptcy proceedings while the city went through one of its darkest times.

The hope is that he can steer the district until it is stable enough to be returned to local control under an elected school board.

DPS is expected to run out of money by the spring, so the pressure is on to get money secured for the cash strapped district.
