RoboCop, the fatally wounded cop who returns as a powerful cyborg in the iconic 1987 film, may be finishing his journey where it all began: in Detroit.

Creators of a 10-foot bronze replica of the original RoboCop are putting finishing touches on the statue that may soon call Detroit its home.

"We still have to buff it out and put the final touches on," said Brandon Walley, who launched a Kickstartercampaign six years ago today to fund the statue.

Walley said the idea was born from a flippant Tweet by a random person to then Mayor Dave Bing about a hypothetical tough RoboCop statue that could kick the butt of the real Rocky statue in Philadelphia.

Bing replied to the tweet saying there were currently no plans to build a RoboCop statue in the city of Detroit.

That's when the light bulb went off for Walley, who said the Detroit portrayed in the film was a metaphor for the U.S. at the time, which was waging a war on drugs.

Six years later; more than $50,000 in donations from fans all over the world; lessons in entertainment product and licensing and a lot of help from local artisans; the statue is almost a reality.

However, RoboCop does not yet have a designated final resting place in the city.

Walley said he's speaking with city officials and many organizations about a location.

"Our priority is that it's in a safe place and that the public can see it," he said.
