Detroit 'top brass' cops formally charged, get unwavering support from union president

Detroit Police Lieutenant Tim Leach and Detroit Police Detective Sergeant Fred Person have both been formally charged in connection with a bar room assault in Corktown.

Detroit Magistrate Jeffery Kleparek set a bond of $50,000,10 percent for Leach and also said he cannot carry a gun. Bond was set for Person at $25,000 and personal release. 

Both are charged in connection with working off-duty as bouncers at the Ottava Via Bar on Michigan Avenue in Corktown during the St. Patty’s Day Parade.  

Eyewitnesses say Mike Karpovich was being escorted out when he was thrown to the floor and hit his head. He has life altering brain damage. The two officers are accused of trying to cover up the evidence and delay the investigation.

Leach is charged with Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, a 10-year felony, plus Tampering with Evidence, Working Security without a license, Aggravated Assault and Neglect of Duty.

Person is charged with Obstruction of Justice, a 5-year felony, Tampering with Evidence and Willful Neglect of Duty. 

Lt. Mark Young, who is the president of the Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association was unwavering in support outside of court. 

“We look forward to hearing all the evidence based on the incident," he said. "And I think when all the facts are in play, it's going to be a different outcome. And we look forward to this one incident not defining them.“
