Detroiters who pay their water bills should not have to foot the bill for folks to refuse to pay their fair share of the funds.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has come up with a method to put an end to the madness.

DWSD has created something much better than a band-aid for the bandits. It’s called the water fraud unit.

It's formula is to target water theft, illegal and unauthorized usage with a focus on commercial accounts. It’s about cost recovery.

The culprits will be hit with civil lawsuits for the sums they have yet to submit.

DWSD Director Gary Brown said he’s proud to be leading the way toward leveling the playing field.

“There’s a new sheriff in town at DWSD and we have the resources and the expertise to come after you, and we’re going to do it vigorously”, say Brown.

Vigorously meaning filing civil lawsuits against owners of properties who have refused to pay their piece of the water bill pie.

If you need help paying your bill with commercial and residential properties, DWSD wants to help. The department now has new and improved resources to aid you. Call 313-267-8000.
