New shop helping families of gun violence

Posted

A new shop in Eastern Market just opened two days ago, selling candles and art pieces.

The store, 'Detroit Wick,' is owned by Doug Schwartz.

His primary focus is scent manufacturing like candles and sprays, but his encapsulation art work is a real hit.

"Actually take these gun parts called 'shreds' and do something creative with them."

Doug uses parts of guns turning them into something called lucite sculptures.

"Swept from these crime scenes, turned into buy-back and amnesty programs and we encapsulate them."

The guns come from all over the country, but every shell casing comes from Detroit crime scenes.

"And then a percentage from sales goes back to fund families of gun violence and fund these buy backs."

Whenever Schwartz sells an item with gun parts, 20% of the proceeds goes to the Caliber Foundation.

"Being able to give back and fund these things to help the cause I think is also incredible."

The store will encapsulate almost anything you bring them, but they won't encapsulate a privately owned gun.

"We don't want to glorify guns more we want to create something artful that has meaning."

Schwartz says the artwork has nothing to do with politics.

"People who love guns love art like this and people who are a 180 of that thought love this as well because of the donation factor."
