DEXTER, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is investigating a home invasion in Dexter, which was all caught on home surveillance.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon on Island Lake Road. The owner and her daughter were home at the time.

“My heart dropped. I just felt my chest pulsating like oh my gosh I can’t believe somebody’s was in our house and we had no idea," said the owner, who asked not to be identified.

The family has a rather extensive home security system, which includes an alarm when any door opens. However, it was turned down low Monday afternoon, so the owner didn't hear it.

Surveillance footage shows the man walking through the family's open garage, then entering the kitchen, even trying to quiet the dog.

He quickly snatches a purse off a table, and takes off.

The owner had no idea the man was even in her house until hours after he left; that's when she noticed her purse was gone.

She began looking through the surveillance footage to see where she may have left it, only to witness the intruder.

“When you look at the footage you can see I just missed him by seconds, looking out the door here, looking out the door here."

While the stranger was walking through the kitchen, surveillance shows the home owner's daughter sleeping on the couch; the intruder was inside the house for less than a minute.

"I feel so violated," the homeowner said.

The family is now upgrading their system to include additional outdoor lighting, in hopes this never happens again.

The sheriff's office is still looking for the suspect, who they said left in a maroon Ford Freestyle.

Anyone with information is asked to the Washtenaw County Sheriff at 734-973-7711.
