LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Diocese of Lansing on Friday released a list of priests who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse since the diocese was founded in 1937.
It found that over the time, there have been 17 priests subject to a credible sexual abuse allegation of a minor. 13 of those were diocesan priests, three were priests from religious orders and one was a priest from another diocese.
According to the diocese, a credible allegation means that diocesan officials determined that the allegation was credible, the accused admitted the allegation, the allegation resulted in a conviction, the allegation resulted in the priest's removal from ministry or it resulted in a civil settlement.
The diocese said that a majority of the credible allegations stem from incidents between the 1960s and mid 1990s, and it said they haven't been aware of any credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor since implementing the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children in 2002
In all, there have been a total of 155 allegations against priests. That includes 73 allegations against the 17 priests credibly accused, and allegations deemed to have insufficient evidence.
