PORT HURON, Mich. (WXYZ) — The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office Dive Team was able to recover a snowmobile that fell through the ice on the Black River Sunday afternoon.
Deputies responded to a 4:15 p.m. call that a snowmobile went through the ice near the I-94 overpass.
Dive team members went to the area and sent out a tender onto the river on an ice sled to examine the hole. The team determined the ice was too thin to safely allow divers and tenders to work.
As a result, the team carefully cut a hole at the edge of the river and attached cables from a tow truck to the snowmobile, which was then pulled out of the water.
The owner was not hurt, officials say.
Temperatures were near zero, wind chill was below zero and tools used during the recovery began to freeze, according to the office.
The Sheriff's Office reminds residents to practice ice safety this winter. A general rule for clear ice is at least 4 inches to walk on the ice or to ice fish and 5-6 inches of ice for a snowmobile.
