With enrollment numbers falling, four Catholic schools were supposed to combine into one called Divine Mercy Roman Catholic Regional School.

But, Catholic school officials decided not to open the much anticipated school in Garden City.

Divine Mercy would have combined four other Kindergarten through 8th grade schools:

* St. Damian in Westland
* St. Genevieve in Livonia
* St. Robert Bellarmine in Redford Township
* St. Raphael in Garden City

St. Raphael's building would have served as the new school.

Rev. Fr. Simeon Iber said, "We don't have the numbers. We were thinking we would be able to have at least 200 or 250 students. As of yesterday, we have only 74 that have registered."

Divine Mercy recently unveiled what the school uniforms would've looked like and the school's mascot as a stingray.

Officials notified parents by Wednesday night.

Some took to Divine Mercy's Facebook page to sound off. Many saying they are sad and disappointed by the decision.

"We are very broken hearted with them. We are very sorry about the situation," Iber added.

Catholic school officials said each school that is closing is within a 5 mile radius of another K through 8 Catholic school.

Parents will have the option to enroll their child there.
