An additional 40 retailers not typically found in downtown Detroit have popped up in the heart of the city just in time for the shopping season.
For the tenth time, the Somerset Collection has created a downtown location with dozens of it’s retailers for downtown shoppers. The ‘Somerset Collection CityLoft’ will be open through Dec. 18.
Michael Jasinski lives across the street and happened to be walking by when he noticed the retail location on Woodward near John R. He’s not too familiar with the area. Jasinski moved from Chicago roughly six months ago, so he jumped at the opportunity to shop without having to drive around town looking for a variety of stores.
“I don’t know my way around the city,” said Jasinski, laughing. “This is condensed, it’s convenient and it’s a little bit easier for me because otherwise it’s going to take hours at the mall and I have no idea what I could get.”
Jasinski browsed the Lego section for his niece, and checked out a variety of clothing vendors too.
The retailers rotate throughout the one month that the store will be open so shoppers will continue to get a different feel each time they walk in the doors. On it’s opening day you could find items from Neiman Marcus, Gap, Eileen Fisher and a variety of other stores.
The space is shared with The Detroit Shoppe, which has been in the downtown location since November of last year. The store focuses on some of the area’s most popular brands including Better Made, Faygo and Motown. Items bought at The Detroit Shoppe also benefit charities.
Linda Macintosh, with Somerset Collection, told 7 Action News that they’ve moved a block or two north from where they typically operate during the Holidays because they wanted to continue to spread retail throughout the downtown area.
“Every year we try to do something a little bit different,” said McIntosh. “What we really want to do is takeover a space and be a model home for retail, an incubator for different ideas.”
One new feature of this year’s pop-up storefront is a delivery service from the main Somerset Collection location in Troy. If a shopper was to make a purchase from any Somerset Collection retailer, even those not at CityLoft, they can have it delivered free of charge.
Somerset Collection CityLoft and The Detroit Shoppe are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 5 p.m.
