GROSSE ILE, Mich. (WXYZ) — A driver was rescued from water after his vehicle was submerged on Friday near the Grosse Ile Yacht Club.

Police say that around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to the area of East River Road, just north of the Grosse Ile Yacht Club, for the report of a suspicious person. Police say a motorist had reported someone on the Hickory Island Bridge yelling.

The responding officer found the subject and was then directed to a waterway north of the yacht club, where he saw a second man face down in the water.

The officer pulled the semi-conscious man, identified as a 29-year-old Westland resident, to shore and reqested an ambulance.

Approximately 100 yards to the east, officers located a submerged 2018 Mazda CX-5 and members of the Grosse Ile Fire Department sent divers into the water to confirm no other occupants were in the vehicle.

Police say the preliminary investigation indicates the Mazda was traveling southbound on East River Road, failed to negotiate the curve and entered the water. Alcohol and/or drugs may have contributed to the crash.

The person located on the bridge, a 27-year-old Westland resident, was a passenger in the vehicle. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.
