MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — A drunk driver has been arrested after a hit-and-run crash in Madison Heights.

At around 5 a.m. Friday, Michigan State Police troopers responded to eastbound I-696 near Dequindre in Madison Heights for a hit-and-run serious crash.

The suspect left his wallet in the driver's seat before running away from the scene - police agencies were given the name and description of the suspect.

Around 8 a.m., a Hazel Park police officer saw a man walking on the I-75 service drive near 10 Mile matching the suspect description. Police say the man was highly intoxicated, registering at twice the legal limit for alcohol.

Police say the suspect thought the MSP helicopter was following him and he was going to be caught. It was in reality a traffic chopper filming the backup after the crash.

The suspect is currently lodged at the Oakland County Jail.

Police say the victim in the crash suffered a broken leg and is in good condition.
