DETROIT (WXYZ) — Two people are dead after a shootout on a major highway in Detroit. It happened on I-96 near the Southfield Freeway overnight.

The highway was closed but has since reopened near Schaefer and Grand River where the shooting happened.

Michigan State Police reported two people are dead – one from the shootout and a third person who died after being hit by a vehicle while trying to run from the scene.

A man and a woman in one of the vehicles were shot, the man was killed; another suspect in a different vehicle was the one who died while trying to run from the scene.

Metro Detroit has seen a major spike in freeway shootings since last summer, with dozens across the area.

Investigators say they're simply separate, unrelated incidents.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story stated that three people died in the shooting, based on information provided by police. On Feb. 24, MSP updated that number to say that the woman shot was hospitalized and in an induced coma. She awoke from her coma on Wednesday.
