TRENTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — You hear of con artists preying on the elderly all the time. Sometimes, scamming them out of all of the money they have.

7 Action News Reporter Andrea Isom takes us to Trenton, where police say, an innocent victim was swindled, yet again.

A 79-year-old woman bought a new laptop and just needed help getting it all up and running.

So she reached out to who she thought was Norton LifeLock for her antivirus protection. Instead, she stumbled across criminals – people who claimed to represent the company.

They were imposters, who lied to her and took more than $14,000 out of her pocket using the gift card scam.

Symantec, the owner of Norton, released this statement in response:

“Norton LifeLock never charges our members for support services nor calls our members unless it was arranged in advance, either in response to an email request or as a follow up to a previous engagement. If you are ever engaged by a person who identifies themselves as a Norton representative, one that you have not previously engaged with, it is not us. It you are ever asked to pay a service fee or a support subscription by a person who identifies themselves as a Norton representative, that too is not us. At Norton LifeLock, we believe in our products, we believe in our services, and we do not charge our members to talk with them. If you believe you have engaged recently, or in the past, with a support imposter, contact us today. Please reach out through your product or via support.norton.com.”
