Police are investigating after an elementary school student brought a loaded gun to school Wednesday.

The incident occurred at Charles L. Spain Elementary School, 3700 Beaubien St. in Detroit. The district released the below statement via a robocall sent home to parents.

"The following robo call was sent home to parents informing them of a gun, with one bullet in the chamber discovered on a student after school at Spain:

We regret to inform you that a gun, with one bullet in the chamber, was discovered on a student this afternoon after school at Spain. The gun was brought to school by an elementary student. The gun was seen by another student at the end of the school day and it was reported to a teacher.  The student was stopped and searched. There was no evidence that the student planned to use the gun at school. This matter is under police investigation where criminal consequences are likely for the student's parents and student removal from the school.

We want to commend students for trusting the school's personnel to act on this information. Please be sure to always ensure you are monitoring your child's behavior, secure weapons at your homes, and randomly check your child's bag before school."
