A judge has sentenced a former police chief on the west side of the state to jail in an embezzlement scheme that started in 2013, according to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.
The case stems from pocketed salvage vehicle inspection fees.

Schutte says ex-Village of Shelby Police Chief Robert Wilson did 669 salvage vehicle inspections between December 2013 and November 2015 and kept the fees instead of turning them over.
In April, Wilson pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement $20,000 or more but less than $50,000 and one count of motor vehicle-false certification.
Schuette says Wilson was sentenced to five months in jail and has been ordered to pay $70,000 in restitution.
“This is about accountability and a public official taking advantage of a situation to benefit himself and not his community,” said Schuette in a statement. “Law enforcement officers are responsible for upholding the law, and in this case the law was broken and time will be served.”
