Combine computer technology with fitness and you get a "smart gym."
Smart gyms are supposed to give a more personalized and efficient work out.
It may look like a typical workout routine but a little computer screen on the equipment can make a big difference.
"Measure your individual muscular makeup, all stored on the computers. Once we have that baseline, then we can deliver exercises that's perfectly appropriate for you," said Jeff Goldman, the co-owner of The Exercise Coach in West Bloomfield.
The Exercise Coach is one of the first gyms in our area to use personalized computer technology to give you an optimal workout.
They claim all you need is two 20-minute sessions a week to see results.
"To cater to the people who are too busy, don't like to work out, are afraid of the gym," Goldman explained. "It definitely equates to someone going to the gym 5-6 days a week and working out for an hour."
A trainer sets up a workout for you.
"We store every repetition you do. Every set you do. We make sure you are improving."
The computer then tests your strength level and adapts to your needs.
"Actually, I'm a retired engineer so seeing the graph on the screen and being able to work to that," client Ed Krunfus said. "Each time you come back you see that you did a little better and it shows on the graph."
Krunfus has been working out at the smart gym for a few weeks and says the two-session-a-week routine works for him.
"Here you feel it immediately. As you walk out the door," he added.
"You can be at the gym doing a curl. We don't know how hard that person is really pushing or not. On ours we can see immediately. We can see it and the client can see it."
Goldman says you only need to do one set on each machine and don't over do it.
"Anything additional than that is unnecessary and redundant. You only need to do that one set," he explained. "You can't come in more than twice a week. I'll tell you why. Because the way we exercise, when the quality of the exercise is this high. You need good two days in between each workout for your muscles to recover."
The Exercise Coach is located at 6245 Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield.
