DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — An exhibition series that has explored the past and present — as well as envisioned the future — of Muslims in southeastern Michigan was preparing to open in Dearborn.

Halal Metropolis was scheduled to launch a roughly three-month exhibition on Jan. 17 at University of Michigan-Dearborn's Stamelos Gallery Center with a reception that includes food and a performance by the Maples Elementary School Arabic Music Ensemble.

Organizers say that with the series, they set out to examine one of the largest and most diverse Muslim populations in the U.S. It has worked to go deeper than merely documenting a population that is highly visible yet still “unusually silent" in the region's larger narrative, according to the project's website.

During its run, the exhibition has planned a gallery talk by the people behind it and panel discussions on food and fashion.
