WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WXYZ) — Wyandotte Police are investigating a home invasion Friday involving a fake construction worker.

Officers were dispatched to a home for a breaking and entering report.

At the home, officers spoke to the homeowner who said he answered a knock at his door to see a man wearing a green hat and vest. The man was described as a Hispanic male in his late 40s, about 5'9" with a heavy build.

The suspect told the homeowner some construction work would be done in the alley behind his home today. The homeowner had a few questions for the suspect about the construction and invited the fake construction inside to walk through his home -- to the side door and out to the alley to see what kind of work needed to be done.

Both were in the alley for about 15 to 20 minutes talking then walked back into the house. The scammer walked through the house at least 35 feet in front of the homeowner. By the time the homeowner walked into his home, the suspect was already out the front door, according to police.

When the homeowner got to the front door, he did not see where the fake construction worker went. It was when he turned around that he noticed several items from his home in disarray. His hallway closet was broken into pieces and several items were on the floor in the hallway.

The victim told police several rooms in his home had been ransacked and even the basement was out of order.

Police searched the area but was unable to find anyone matching the description of the fake construction worker.

The investigation is ongoing.
