DETROIT (WXYZ) — We're learning more about the mother and son who were victims of a deadly house fire on Detroit's west side.

The family of Cassandra and Christian Morrow say it's not mystery what happened, but police are in the early part of their investigation and say they've drawn no conclusions. They are only calling what happened on Clayburn St. a suspicious fire right now.

Investigators say neighbors saw smoke coming from the home and called 911. When they got inside, they found 36-year-old Cassandra, who they say also suffered a gunshot wound.

"It's heartbreaking. My sister don't mess with nobody," Demetris Morrow said.

Demetris said she lost the oldest of five siblings who was a mother figure, after losing their mom in 2004.

She's now praying her 4-year-old nephew, Christian, is able to pull through. He suffered critical injuries from the fire.

"My nephew is so lovable. He's just everything," Demetris said. He turns 5 in just two weeks.

"Now we have to figure out a way to explain to him that my sister is gone. He don't have a mother no more," she said.

If you have any information, you are urged to call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

A GoFundMe has been set up by the family to cover memorial costs here.
