3 Farmington schools could close, voting tonight

The Farmington Public Schools Board of Education is set to vote on closing up to three schools today, including Harrison High School.

Residents are not happy about the possible closure. Harrison is a well known football school, and has been part of the community for decades.

The district says there are three reasons they're closing schools, the first is student enrollment. They have lost more than 1,600 students from fall 2008 to fall 2014.

The superintendent says they are still projected to lose another 800 students over the next five years.

The district says they aren't receiving enough funding from the state, and their general fund balance has dropped dramatically from $35 million in 2007 to just $8.6 million in 2014.

The schools they're considering for closure:

For elementary schools, they could choose between these three: Beachview, Kenbrook or Highmeadow Common Campus.

If an upper elementary or middle school were to be closed, they are considering Warner Upper Elementary or Dunckel Middle School.

If a high school were closed, that would be Harrison.

Two weeks ago, the superintendent proposed closing Highmeadow, Dunckel and Harrison.

The district has already held two public forums on the proposed changes.

Tonight the school board is set to vote on the superintendent's newest proposal.

That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Farmington High School.
