FERNDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) — From having a dream to watching it come true, metro Detroit novelist Josh Malerman is living that magical moment.

His book, was turned into a star-studded movie and it premiered Friday.

Our Andrea Isom sat down with him at his home in Ferndale.

Malerman, a West Bloomfield High School and Michigan State University grad, is a horror novelist. However, Malerman’s style comes from a joyful, child-like, imaginative place.

Now, the Malerman way is taking the world by storm.

“The first book of mine that was published, Bird Box, was turned into a movie starring Sandra Bullock and an all-star cast was released on Netflix today," he says.

Malerman is rubbing shoulders on the red carpet in Hollywood, and watching his words, his passion, his vision come to life was powerful, satisfying and surreal.

“I don’t think I was prepared for the movie to be this good. It’s almost like watching a fantasy of yours being like filled in the colors, the details, being filled in in front of you. I’m just super grateful for everything that is happening,” Malerman says in awe.
