FERNDALE, Mich. (WXYZ) — People who live in Ferndale have been on alert this week.

Elevated levels of lead were found in the city's water supply. Now, the city is explaining its plan of action.

Officials say samples were taken from 31 properties – and four came back with elevated levels.

The city plans to "double" the number of sites tested per year and the frequency of those tests. It's also going to begin a plan to replace the city's existing lead lines next year.

At least seven percent of the lead lines will be replaced per year until they're all replaced.

“With the lead service line, obviously you don’t want to just test the first liter or even the first 250 milliliters," said Jennifer Bolt, an Environmental Quality Specialist with EGLE. "That you really want to get that water that’s sitting in contact with the service line."

Experts say levels can vary depending how long they've been sitting in the pipes.

The city is also handing out free water filters for residents who qualify.

They'll be available Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Gerry Kulick Community Center on 1201 Livernois Street.
