Fire that killed man inside Highland Park Wendy's treated as an accident

Posted

Highland Park fire investigators say a fire that killed a man inside Wendy's is being treated as an accident.

When it first happened, some wondered whether or not he purposefully set himself on fire, but right now, it doesn't appear so.

According to investigators, the man went into the Wendy's on Friday afternoon and asked to use the restroom. Shortly after, people inside heard screams and then he came out of the bathroom on fire.

Workers called 911, but the fire spread through his clothes, burning 50 percent of his body.

Investigators say the man was homeless and appears to have been cleaning himself with alcohol preps from an area hospital. He was also smoking at the time, which could explain how he went up in flames.

The medical examiner's office says the man has not yet been formally identified by his family.
