(WXYZ) — A first-of-its-kind coding school has now opened in Michigan. The goal is to help provide kids with skills that can help them grow and excel in a world that's built on innovation and technology.
It's called theCoderSchool. Its first Michigan location just opened in Plymouth and that space is owned by Raj Patel and his wife.
"The world runs on innovation," Patel said. "We want to make sure we give students tool sets to work in those environments in the future."
Gavin La Rue says he's been wanting to code since the fifth grade and now he's learning to do that.
"They actually teach you how to do it and experiment with what you want to do," La Rue said.
Patel describes it as a hands-on learning experience. He says students first start with an assessment and then the classes build on the child's interest. Students are as young as 7. They use a variety of platforms to teach different coding languages. Each lesson is customized with a 2 to 1 student to coach approach.
"We live in a world of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok... but someone developed those," Patel said. "We just don't have these user interfaces. There's a whole code behind everything and that's what I strive our students to learn how to do."
Alan Eden took his kids to theCoderSchool for the first time and says they enjoyed it.
"Hopefully they can learn a new skill, they can take it further on in life," Eden said. "Coding stuff, even small things, can help you automate stuff for data processing, different projects at school (and) a lot of applications. Hopefully it becomes useful and maybe (turns into) a career."
