You heard their story first on 7 Action News. The principal and teachers at Spain Elementary Middle School blew the whistle on deplorable conditions inside their school - asking for help Fixing Their School.

Then Ellen DeGeneres announced she teamed up with Lowe’s and the Lowe’s Foundation to fix it. The Lowe’s Foundation donated $500,000.

Today, crews sent by Lowe’s went to work fixing the roof over the water-damaged gym. The gym is so damaged, kids can’t use it.

“The Spain donation from Ellen and Lowe’s and The Lowe's Foundation is pretty monumental," said Michelle Zdrodowski, DPS Executive Director of Communications. “It doesn’t happen everyday.”

The school district says the work is not done. It has created a fund through the Detroit Public Schools Foundation that people can donate to - if they want their money to be spent repairing buildings.

Parents are grateful for the donations. They can’t wait to see their kids playing in a clean and safe gym.

“Thank you so much,” said Maume Hall-Sanders. “I am beyond excited that you guys stepped up to help us and our children be in a safe environment.”
