On Thursday the Detroit Federation of Teachers joined a group of parents to sue Detroit Public Schools. They say the district is ignoring dangerous school buildings and needs to fix them.
One school where numerous kids and teachers are reported sick due to conditions is Spain Elementary-Middle School.
“The first year she was fine. I have been noticing over the last two years she has been having respiratory type problems and chest pains,” said Lisa Card, the mom of a student at Spain Elementary-Middle School.
She says she had gone to the school before with her children, but never looked in the gym where the roof had been leaking for years.
When she saw our story showing the damage the leak had caused, she was shocked.
She immediately wondered if her daughter was allergic to mold growing in the school, and being sent throughout the building by way of the ventilation system.
7 Action News spoke to Dr. Amy L. Marks, an allergy and asthma specialist at Beaumont Hospital in Troy.
“Upon repeated exposure over time to mold people predisposed to allergies can develop an allergy,” said Dr. Marks.
It can make you pretty miserable.It causes watery eyes, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, cough, and itchy eyes, nose, and throat. If you have asthma, it can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Lisa Card says she is torn. Her daughter loves her teachers, friends, and school. She wants to see the district fix the problem.
If it doesn’t she will have to transfer her daughter to a cleaner and safer school.
