Heavy rain is expected this evening and will continue off & on into Monday morning. This will make for a soggy start to the workweek, but it also creates the opportunity for some localized flooding.
Why the Risk?
The rainfall Metro Detroit will experience tonight are the "Tropical Leftovers" of a system the National Hurricane Center was tracking earlier this week. Given its origin, it comes as no surprise that this air-mass has a lot of moisture to work with. It's one of the main reasons our "Meter Meter" climbed to Mid-July levels this today and will remain high until Monday afternoon.
Not only is there a lot of moisture in the atmosphere near the ground, but there's also a ton above as well. When this is the case, all you need is a good "storm trigger" like a cold front to get things started and we'll have one coming through tonight. This system is also a slow mover - meaning heavy rain could not only sit in place for a while, but some locations can get hit repeatedly.
Monday's Rush Hour
Beware of standing water on the roads during the morning commute. If flooding does occur, getting stuck in high water would be a bad way to start the workweek.
