The governor's office has confirmed that the former head of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance unit, Liane Shekter Smith, has been fired.

According to the release, Shekter Smith was terminated from state employment after a review of the events leading up to the Flint water crisis.

“Putting the well-being of Michiganders first needs to be the top priority for all state employees,” Snyder said in a press release. “Anything less than that is unacceptable. The DEQ is working to change this culture and ensure mistakes that endanger our residents don’t occur again.”

The review process of another staff member who was suspended last month is ongoing.
