DETROIT (WXYZ) — Thursday is National “World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Day”, a day meant to encourage parents across the nation to teach children how to swim.

Here are some tips from “The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson” organization:

  • Get kids in the water and teach them how to swim. The American Academy of Pediatrics now supports swimming classes after the age of one.
  • Never leave a child unattended in the water and teach them to never swim alone without supervision or at least a friend.
  • If your child is a weak swimmer and new, have them wear a life jacket and don’t water wings as a replacement. A life jacket if your best bet.
  • Watch out for being be too tired, too cold or too far from safety. It’s not a good idea to swim on those days.

The Wayne County Family Aquatic Center is holding swim lessons as part of the “World's Largest Swimming Lesson."

The pool is located at 12600 Chandler Park Drive in Detroit.

Admission and lessons are free. Doors open at 3:00 p.m., registration begins at 4:00 p.m. and lessons will start at 5:00 p.m. and end at 7:00 pm..
