(WXYZ) — Crews have freed a freighter that was stuck in the Detroit River.
The Harvest Spirit was grounded on the east side of Grosse Ile near Bois Blanc Island. She is now being towed out of the channel.
A second ship struck bottom after the freighter experienced engine failure and ran aground in the Detroit River near Grosse Ile early Wednesday. The groundings led to several freighters being held off the river in Lake Huron until it was clear.
According to the Canadian Coast Guard, after the first grounding, which occurred around 6 a.m., all traffic was directed to go down the channel as long as they felt it was safe.
The first cargo ship to attempt to pass the Harvest Spirit also touched ground, according to the Coast Guard.
A tug company was sent to the site of the incident to try and help the Harvest Spirit while the cargo ship Gardno is now anchored to assess any damage.
