Garden City man charged with fatally shooting off-duty Detroit police officer

GARDEN CITY, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Garden city man was charged on Thursday with first-degree murder and felony firearm in connection to the fatal shooting of off-duty Detroit Sgt. Elaine Williams.

Garden City police discovered Williams, 34, dead on Sunday night after arriving to a house on Belton Street in response to a shooting. They also found the defendant, 35-year-old Eddie Ray-Jr Johnson, nearby with an injury. Johnson allegedly shot Williams, his domestic partner at the time, multiple times.

Following the incident, Johnson was taken into custody and admitted into a hospital for his injury.

Johnson was arraigned in the hospital on Thursday.
