Drivers in metro Detroit have seen a dramatic increase in gas prices over the past week, more than doubling the national average increase for the week.
According to GasBuddy, gas prices have risen 8.3 cents per gallon this week, with the average now $2.46 per gallon.
The national average has risen 3.5 cents per gallon to $2.31 a gallon. In all, the national average has risen 8.3 cents per gallon over the past month and is 18.2 cents per gallon higher than one year ago.
According to Gas Buddy, the prices have ranged over the past five years in metro Detroit on July 31.
In 2016, it was $2.22/gallon, while it was $2.16/gallon in 2015, $3.43/gallon in 2014, $3.58/gallon in 2013 and $3.75/gallon in 2012.
GasBuddy says the price increases have continued because crude oil prices rallied and are near $50 a barrel, due to unrest over politics in Venezuela.
