Detroit Police are giving credit to the owner of a Citgo Gas Station at Schoolcraft and Greenfield for helping them catch teens suspected of carjackings.

Police responded to a carjacking caught on camera around 1:30 last Friday morning at the business. A young man armed with a gun stole a car from a woman as she filled up. They collected high quality video recorded as part of Project Green Light.

Project Green Light started in January 2016. Detroit Police Department partnered with volunteer businesses. They installed high quality real-time camera connections between the businesses and police headquarters.

Police arrested the suspect. It turns out he is only 16 years old.

That arrest allowed police to gather more information. They found out this was not an isolated crime. It is believed the teen and a 17-year-old were responsible for a carjacking spree. Police say they are suspects in at least 3 crimes.  Soon police arrested the 17-year-old.

“Most of these kids are really lost. They need some guidance,” said Ali Shammout, Manager of the Citgo.
