DETROIT (WXYZ) — General Motors is set to lay off more than 800 workers at its Detroit Hamtramck plant in early 2020.
According to the state's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) site, on Tuesday GM notified the Workforce Development Department of their plan to let go of about 814 hourly and salaried employees at the Hamtramck Assembly plant effective February 28, 2020.
Approximately 753 of these employees are plant production workers, all represented byt the UAW International Union and Local Union 22, according to GM's notification letter to the Workforce Development Department.
GM says the laid off employees may be eligible to receive State Unemployment Compensation. Detroit Hamtramck plant employees may also be eligible for Supplement Unemployment Benefits in accordance with Exhibit "D" to the agreement between General Motors Corportation LLC and the UAW dated Oct. 28, 2019.
