General Motors workers received notice Tuesday that the company will be laying off employees at its Brownstown and Hamtramck plants.
Lay offs at the Brownstown plant, 20001 Brownstown Cener Drive, will affect 50 hourly and salaried employees, while the two Hamtramck plants, located at 2500 E. Grand Blvd. in Detroit, will affect a total of 696 hourly employees.
"A strong U.S. economy enables us to provide these opportunities now as we position General Motors for long-term success," the notice read. " General Motors' focus remains on providing interested employees options to transition, including providing job opportunities at other GM plants where possible. GM remains committed to working with local government officials, our union and each individual to find appropriate opportunities for them."
The layoffs will begin Feb. 18, 2019.
This news follows GM's announcement in November of the closure of two plants in Ohio and Michigan, resulting in the lay off of thousands of employees. That news was met with backlash from President Trump.
Trump stated that GM CEO Mary Barra had made a "big mistake" in laying off workers. He then pledged to retaliate against the company.
