ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 37-year-old Riley Township man was hit and killed while trying to help a friend whose car ran out of the gas on I-69 Friday night.

St. Clair County deputies say on May 17 around 11:41 p.m., a 33-year-old Lapeer woman ran out of gas and parked on the shoulder of the I-69 expressway.

She called her friend, a 37-year-old man, who showed up and parked his car behind hers. While he helped the woman put gas in her vehicle, a 45-year-old Wales Township man, driving a 2016 Jeep Compass, crossed the white fog line and struck and killed the Good Samaritan.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, deputies say.

The investigation is ongoing.
