Cold weather has infiltrated the Detroit area, and that means an uptick in flu cases. Men, in particular, seem to get hit hardest during this time of year. Why is that?

Well, researchers say it might all come down to differences between male and female physiology. And as a result of these differences, there’s a good chance that men DO actually suffer a bit more than women from respiratory infections like the flu.

Well, evidence shows that men may have weaker immune systems than women, which would make them less efficient at fighting off common viruses.

When the flu is lurking around, guys are more likely to get sick than women are. Not only that, but their symptoms tend to be worse and they stay sick longer than women do.

So it appears that men do indeed get hit harder by the flu, which might be why they complain more!

Now is definitely the time to start taking precautions to avoid being sick. Here are a few things everyone should keep in mind.

Partha’s Rx:

1. It's crucial to practice good preventative health habits. Get enough sleep, eat well, manage stress, and exercise.

2. Avoid close contact with people who might be sick, and wash your hands often.

3. Get your flu shot. The CDC recommends that all Americans over age 6 get one every season.

4. If you think you might be sick, stay home from work or school so you don’t infect others.
