Red wine may provide protection from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s - through your gut.
The latest study focused on compounds left in the gut once the red wine had passed through it. These compounds are known as metabolites.
The researchers added them to human neurons that were under stress conditions that resembled stages of certain neurodegenerative disorders.
Neurons are cells of the nervous system used to transmit signals. The results showed wine metabolites protected the neurons from dying due to stress. When neurons are protected, there is less change of developing Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s.
It actually depends on the composition of your gut microbiota.
Wine is broken down into different metabolites all dependent upon your gut flora, the trillions of microorganisms living inside your intestines. And that means you need to have a balanced and healthy diet.
What you eat is crucial in the prevention of diseases and can also reduce your risk of getting sick.
- Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low in saturated fats. Choose brightly colored fruit and vegetables as they are high in antioxidant nutrients.
- Follow my 80-20 rule. 80% of the time eat whole nutritious foods and avoid processed foods as much as possible.
- Stick to moderate alcohol limits. That means 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks per day for men.
- A glass of wine should be no more than 5-ounces. But please don’t drink if you’re pregnant, or have health conditions or take daily aspirin.
There are a lot of studies supporting red wine but if you don’t drink, I would not recommend starting.
Alcohol can be addictive and lead to numerous health problems. You’ll reap a ton of benefits just from eating healthy, getting exercise and watching your weight.
