Help Wanted: Summer lifeguard jobs available

As hot summer days approach, the Oakland County parks department is hoping to avoid a major issue: rearranging schedules due to a lack of lifeguards.

It’s been a problem in the past, but this year they’re far behind on hiring. At the Red Oaks Waterpark they’re short roughly 20 lifeguards. They can operate, but with a shortage of that many lifeguards a shift in scheduling could happen. That would mean fewer hours of operation.

“It’s critical for our operations,” said the park supervisor, Matt Pardy. “Without lifeguards we can’t operate. We’re, unfortunately, at this point where we are looking at altering our operating schedule in our park here and our sister park.”

Waterford Oaks also has a handful of openings. Pardy said they’re in better shape, but still seeking lifeguards.

The jobs are part-time and seasonal, but the training is offered for free through the county.

The idea of not opening the park because they can’t find help, is troubling for those involved with the park.

“We’ve got people planning trips weeks and months in advance,” said Ryan Danescu. “We need to make sure we’re open when we’re supposed to be open.”

Lifeguards start at $10.45/hour and are offered free training through the Oakland County Parks and Recreation department. Applicants need to be 16 years old, or older. It’s recommended that all applicants are comfortable and confident in their swimming abilities.
