(WXYZ) — A 23-year-old Highland woman has been charged with the assault and abandonment of her newborn infant girl.

Jennifer Kayla Woodard has been charged with Assault With Intent to Murder, Child Abandonment and Second Degree Child Abuse.

On Sept. 10, Detroit police were dispatched to Sinai Grace hospital in response to a 911 call that a newborn infant had been dropped off without parents.

Woodard was arrested on Sept. 13.

Prosecutors say she allegedly gave birth at the residence of the acquaintance. She also allegedly threw the infant into a garbage can.

The acquaintance reportedly found the newborn and drove her to the local hospital for treatment. When the infant arrived at the hospital, prosecutors say she was cold to the touch and lost a large amount of blood, resulting in a blood transfusion. This was due to the the umbilical cord not being clamped off.

Woodard received a $50,000 bond.
