HAMTRAMCK (WXYZ) — A historic Negro League ballpark in Hamtramck is getting a facelift with a $500,000 federal grant. It was once home to the Detroit Stars.
The grant is through the National Park Service, and was approved Thursday by the Wayne County Commission. Hall of Famers like Turkey Stearnes, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige and many other Negro League legends once played on the field.
“This is wonderful news and I’m sure this project will bring lots of people to Hamtramck,” said Commissioner Martha G. Scott (D-Highland Park) whose district includes the stadium.
The grant will be used to demolish seats and handrails, clean and strip paint from the metal grandstand and repair and replace other areas of the 90-year-old stadium as needed, a release states.
